'Democracy incomplete without challenge; BJP leaders will face public scrutiny before polls,' says Ramakanta Deuri
As political activity gathers momentum ahead of the upcoming elections in Assam, Morigaon MLA Ramakanta Deuri on February 3, emphasised that challenge and competition are fundamental to a healthy democratic system.
Speaking at a programme held at Charibahi Higher Secondary School, Deuri said that politics and democracy derive their strength from challenge. “Politics and democracy must have challenges. Without challenge, there is no beauty in elections,” he remarked, adding that elections would lose their meaning in the absence of robust competition and public scrutiny.
Highlighting the importance of accountability, the MLA said that Bharatiya Janata Party representatives would reach out to voters ahead of the elections to present their work. “We will go to the people, seek their blessings, and clearly show what we have done and what remains to be done,” he said, noting that the objective is to ensure voters are fully informed about the performance of their elected representatives.
Referring to the BJP’s internal functioning, Deuri said the party follows a disciplined system and does not have a practice of leaders applying for tickets, unlike the Congress. He explained that the BJP focuses on merit and performance rather than internal lobbying.
The legislator further stated that every party worker has a “report card” maintained by the party leadership in Delhi and Dispur, which documents the performance of public representatives over a ten-year period, including their achievements and pending work. According to him, this mechanism is aimed at promoting responsibility and transparency.
Deuri also informed that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed all BJP MLAs to submit a detailed account of their ten years of work by February 7. He added that these reports would not remain confined to the government or the party but would be placed before the public.
Criticising opposition parties, the MLA said they often make numerous promises ahead of elections which disappear after the polls. In contrast, he asserted that the BJP does not merely make promises but remains committed to its responsibilities. “Once the BJP takes up a task, it is determined to complete it,” Deuri said.
