Democracy serves the day in Dhubri: Assistant cook in school elected through ballot

In an extraordinary turn of events, a primary school in the Dhubri district became the epicentre of a unique electoral drama.

Forget MLAs and Panchayat elections—this was about choosing an assistant cook for 1784 No Laukhowa Kuti LP School in Bishkhowa Part-V under the Golakganj Education Block.

The decision to hold an election was made after widespread controversy erupted over the appointment process for the assistant cook position. 

Faced with mounting pressure and confusion, the school authorities opted for this democratic approach to resolve the matter.

The two candidates for the post were Minati Roy, who was contesting under the lotus symbol, and Shefali Roy, who chose the house symbol.

A total of 47 voters, including members of the school's governing body and local parents, were eligible to cast their votes. Out of which, 42 votes were polled.

The election results revealed a close contest. Shefali Roy emerged victorious with 23 votes, defeating Minati Roy, who garnered 19 votes. 

The announcement of the results brought a sense of relief to the local community, which had been eagerly following the developments.

This unconventional election has sparked curiosity and debate among the public, with many appreciating the democratic approach to resolving disputes. 

Shefali Roy's win has been warmly welcomed by locals, marking the end of a contentious selection process and Shefali Roy promises to bring “flavours of unity” to the students’ mid-day meals.
