Hundreds of villagers from Moterjhar and nearby areas of Dhubri staged a massive protest on August 23, blocking National Highway 127B after the sudden closure of a vital road that served as their only access route to markets, schools and hospitals.
The decision, reportedly made by the railway department without prior notice, has severed a vital link for approximately 20 villages, leaving locals stranded and furious. The protest, which saw over 500 men and women participate, brought traffic to a standstill on the newly constructed highway.
The demonstrators voiced their anger and frustration over the railway department's abrupt action, which they claim has left them without a viable route for daily transportation. "The railway department has suddenly decided to close our main road, without any warning," a protestor lamented. "This road was our lifeline. How are we supposed to get to the market, to the hospital, or to schools now?"
The villagers are demanding that the authorities immediately reopen the previous road, which they say is essential for the movement of people and goods. They have vowed to continue their protest until their demands are met, warning of more intense agitation if the matter is not resolved swiftly.
Local authorities have arrived at the scene and are attempting to negotiate with the protestors. However, the villagers remain steadfast in their demand for the immediate reinstatement of the old route, insisting that the newly built highway does not adequately serve the needs of their communities. The standoff continues as the villagers await a positive response from the railway and local administration.
