Dibrugarh family accused of Rs 3-crore fraud in post office, LIC and bank deposits

Three members of a family have been accused of allegedly defrauding several people of nearly Rs 3 crore by promising attractive returns on deposits in post office schemes, Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) policies and banks in Assam's Dibrugarh.

The accused have been identified as Ratan Pal, his brother Rajiv Pal and Ratan's wife Pallavi Dutta Pal.

The trio allegedly collected money from several people by presenting themselves as agents of the respective financial institutions and encouraging them to invest their hard-earned savings.

According to the complainants, the money collected in the name of deposits and investments was allegedly not deposited with the concerned institutions but misappropriated.

The alleged fraud came to light after investors realised that their money was missing. The accused, who reportedly lived in a rented house in Dibrugarh's Shantipara area, allegedly fled overnight after the matter surfaced, the complainants claimed.

Several people from Dibrugarh and other areas are suspected to have been affected by the alleged fraud, with victims claiming that the total amount involved could be around Rs 3 crore.

The alleged victims said they had invested their savings over several years, trusting the promises of better returns and financial security. Many are now struggling to recover their money and have approached the police for action.

A case has been registered against the three accused at Dibrugarh Sadar Police Station. Further investigation is underway to establish the circumstances of the alleged fraud and trace the accused.

The allegations are yet to be established through investigation.
