Dibrugarh observes Mahalaya as Devi Paksha begins, Durga Puja preparations gather pace

Dibrugarh observed Mahalaya on Saturday, October 10 with prayers, ancestral offerings and religious rituals marking the end of Pitru Paksha and the beginning of Devi Paksha, signalling the approach of the annual Durga Puja celebrations.

Devotees gathered at various locations across the city from the early hours of the morning to perform rituals and offer tarpan to their departed ancestors. The occasion holds religious significance for Hindus, who pray for the peace of their ancestors' souls while preparing to welcome Goddess Durga.

Mahalaya marks the transition from Pitru Paksha, the fortnight dedicated to honouring ancestors, to Devi Paksha, the period associated with the worship of the divine feminine. It also signals the beginning of the festive season ahead of Durga Puja.

The occasion is closely associated with Goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasura, for which she is worshipped as Mahishasuramardini. Traditional Agomoni songs, welcoming the goddess to her parental home, are also an integral part of Mahalaya observances.

In Dibrugarh, the devotional atmosphere and religious observances reflected the anticipation surrounding the upcoming festival. Preparations for Durga Puja are gathering pace across the city, with residents looking forward to the celebrations with family and friends.

Devotees are now awaiting Bodhan, the ritual invocation of Goddess Durga, which forms an important part of the festival's religious observances.
