Dibrugarh school ‘gaming challenge’ scare: 12 students identified, probe underway

Concern has gripped a school in Dibrugarh after allegations that a group of students were involved in a potentially dangerous “challenging game”. 

The school authorities have identified 12 students in connection with the incident and informed their parents, while an investigation is underway to determine whether any mobile game or online challenge was involved.

The incident was reported at Don Bosco School in Dibrugarh after two students approached a teacher and informed them about their involvement in what was suspected to be a dangerous game or challenge. The teacher immediately alerted the school authorities, following which the matter was taken up for investigation.

Of the 12 students identified, eight are girls and four are boys. The school authorities informed their parents and arranged necessary medical attention.

According to the school authorities, scratch-like marks were noticed on the hands of some students. However, none of the students suffered bleeding injuries or required stitches. As a precaution, they were advised necessary first aid, including tetanus vaccination, based on medical advice.

During preliminary questioning, it reportedly emerged that some students had used broken plastic or blade portions from pencil sharpeners while carrying out the activity.

However, authorities have not yet established any direct link between the incident and a specific mobile or online game. The exact circumstances and reason behind the students' actions remain under investigation.

On September 11, several teams from the district administration, education department, health services and child protection authorities visited the school to assess the situation.

Four teams, comprising officials from the district administration, education inspection, BDO office, mobile medical services and the child protection office, took part in the investigation.

The teams spoke to eight students who were present at the school and also conducted physical examinations. CCTV footage from the classrooms was examined as part of the probe.

Following the assessment, authorities and the school management have stressed the need for appropriate counselling and psychological support for the students. Measures are being taken to ensure their safety and mental well-being.

Officials have maintained that the incident cannot, at this stage, be conclusively attributed to any particular online game or social media challenge. The actual cause is expected to become clearer once the investigation is completed.

The incident has also renewed concerns among parents, teachers and school authorities over the possible influence of online gaming and challenge-based content on children, and the need for greater monitoring and awareness around such content.
