Dibrugarh’s historic school playground reduced to a garbage yard, public outrage grows
What was once a vibrant playground that nurtured generations of students and budding athletes has now become a symbol of neglect and administrative apathy in Dibrugarh.
The historic playground of the Dibrugarh Government Higher Secondary Boys' School has reportedly been turned into a parking and storage area for garbage collection vehicles of the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation.
Residents have expressed strong resentment over the deteriorating condition of the field, which once served as a hub for sports and recreational activities. The ground is now allegedly littered with waste, surrounded by foul odours, and occupied by damaged municipal vehicles.
Locals claim that despite repeated promises by authorities regarding tourism development and infrastructure projects, little has been done to restore the playground to its former glory. They allege that while the administration becomes active during fairs and commercial events held on the ground, the site is left abandoned and neglected once those events conclude.
The playground, regarded as an important part of Dibrugarh’s educational and sporting heritage, has produced numerous athletes over the years. Concerned citizens now fear that continued neglect could permanently damage one of the town’s most cherished public spaces.
Residents have urged the district administration and municipal authorities to take immediate steps to clean and restore the field, ensuring that future generations have access to a safe and functional playground. They say the people of Dibrugarh no longer want promises but concrete action to preserve this historic sporting venue.
