Digital leap and green revolution: Assam gets hyperscale data hub, 100 more EV buses

Guwahati is set to witness a major boost in both digital infrastructure and green mobility, with the announcement of a hyperscale data centre and the addition of 100 more electric buses to the city’s public transport fleet.

During the Advantage Assam programme, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced the setting up of a Hyperscale Data Centre in the state, marking a significant step towards strengthening Assam’s digital backbone. In addition, the National Informatics Centre (NIC) has established an advanced AI-enabled data centre at Amingaon.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the hyperscale facility, a move expected to enhance data management capacity, improve digital services, and position Assam as an emerging technology hub in the Northeast.

In another major development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Guwahati will receive 100 additional electric buses under the Prime Minister’s initiative to promote sustainable urban transport.

With this addition, the city’s electric bus fleet will increase to 400. Combined with the existing 100 CNG buses, Guwahati’s total green public transport fleet will rise to 500 buses.

The Chief Minister stated that Assam now has the capacity to gradually phase out diesel buses, signalling a decisive shift towards cleaner and more sustainable urban mobility.
