Drugs worth Rs 2.5 crore seized in Assam's Barpeta; truck driver held
Barpeta Police carried out a major anti-drug operation in Assam’s Barpeta district and seized narcotics and Yaba tablets worth an estimated Rs 2.5 crore, officials said.
The operation was conducted at Kaljhar in Howly area along National Highway 27 based on specific intelligence inputs.
According to police, the contraband was recovered after officers intercepted a truck and cut open a specially modified section inside its body where the narcotics and Yaba tablets had been concealed.
The truck driver, identified as Akkas Ali, has been arrested in connection with the seizure.
Barpeta Superintendent of Police Pushkin Jain said the truck was travelling towards Kokrajhar from Dimapur when it was intercepted by police.
“The estimated market value of the seized narcotics is around Rs 2.5 crore,” the Barpeta SP said.
The truck bearing registration number AS 01 TC 6890 was allegedly being used to transport the contraband hidden inside a specially created compartment.
Senior police officials, including Barpeta SSP Pushkin Jain, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Samiran Baishya and other top officials, were present at the spot during the operation.
Police have launched further investigation to identify possible links in the drug trafficking network.
