Eastern India poised to play major role in national growth: Himanta Biswa Sarma
Himanta Biswa Sarma on May 13 said Eastern part of India is witnessing a renewed rise in national importance and asserted that the region would play a significant role in the country’s future growth under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Speaking to the media in Guwahati, the Assam Chief Minister referred to the historical civilisational legacy of regions such as Anga, Vanga, Kalinga and Kamarupa, stating that these regions together represented a strong and influential civilisation that had contributed to India’s strength in the past.
Sarma said states including Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Assam and the wider North East would contribute substantially to India’s economic and developmental progress in the coming years. He described the eastern region as an increasingly important segment in contemporary Indian politics.
The Chief Minister also stressed the need for stronger governance and accountability, saying people were no longer willing to accept explanations centred on political limitations or administrative challenges. Referring to issues linked to governance and border management, he said citizens expected governments to deliver concrete outcomes and would hold them accountable.
Sarma further said the government was prepared to answer public expectations and expressed confidence that “double-engine” governance would work with intensity and commitment for the nation’s development.
The remarks come amid renewed political focus on eastern and northeastern India, with the region increasingly being viewed as strategically important in both economic and political terms.
