Electric rail services launched in Tinsukia as Ledo–Tinsukia section goes fully electrified
Electric train operations were formally inaugurated in Assam’s Tinsukia district on December 30, marking a significant milestone in the modernization of railway infrastructure in the region.
The launch follows the completion of railway electrification on key sections connecting Ledo to Tinsukia and Makum to Dangri.
An inauguration ceremony was held at Ledo Railway Station, which falls under the 83rd Margherita Legislative Assembly Constituency. The programme began with traditional puja and archana, symbolising the commencement of electrically operated rail services on the route.
The Divisional Railway Manager of the Tinsukia division, along with several senior railway officials, attended the ceremony. Addressing the gathering, railway officials confirmed that the electrification work on the Ledo–Tinsukia and Makum–Dangri sections has been completed, enabling electric locomotives to operate on these routes from today.
Officials highlighted that the shift from diesel to electric traction will significantly reduce diesel consumption, leading to lower carbon emissions and reduced environmental pollution. They said the move aligns with Indian Railways’ broader goal of achieving sustainable and energy-efficient transportation.
Railway authorities expressed confidence that the electrification of these sections would not only contribute to environmental conservation but also enhance operational efficiency, reliability and speed of train services, thereby improving connectivity and passenger experience in upper Assam and adjoining areas.
