Encroachment threatens historic Missa Koth and Chamdhara Fort in Assam’s Kaliabor, locals demand eviction

Two significant relics of Assam’s medieval military history—Missa Koth and Chamdhara Fort—are facing an existential threat due to unchecked encroachment, triggering concern among historians, cultural bodies, and local residents.

Located near Missa and Rangagara along the four-lane National Highway No. 37 in Kaliabor, the two heritage structures were once integral to the fortification network of medieval Assam. However, large portions of the sites have reportedly been encroached upon, raising fears of irreversible damage to these historically important monuments.

The issue has drawn sharp criticism as eviction drives against illegal encroachments continue in various parts of Assam, including different areas of Nagaon district, yet no concrete action has been taken to reclaim and protect Missa Koth and Chamdhara Garh. The perceived inaction has led to allegations of administrative apathy towards heritage conservation.

Highlighting the urgency of the matter, the Nagaon District Sahitya Sabha has demanded the immediate removal of encroachments from both sites. The literary body has also called for scientific conservation, proper documentation, and long-term preservation measures to safeguard the monuments for future generations.

Heritage activists warn that unless swift intervention is undertaken, these remnants of Assam’s glorious past may be lost permanently, erasing a vital chapter of the region’s historical and cultural identity.
