Eviction drive looms over 688 bighas, 879 families in Assam's Bongaigaon

Tension has gripped several villages under the Boitamari Revenue Circle in Bongaigaon district after the Circle Officer issued eviction notices to residents living on encroached government land.

Following the issuance of the notices, panic and uncertainty have spread among hundreds of families who have been residing on the land for years.

According to official information, nearly 879 families have been living illegally on about 688 bighas of government land in the Jogighopa area.

Of this, Koreya Pahar village has around 383 families occupying nearly 320 bighas, while Bharalkundi Beel village has 496 families residing on approximately 368 bighas of encroached land. Eviction notices have been formally issued from the Boitamari Revenue Circle Office to residents of both Koreya Pahar and Bharalkundi Beel villages.

The move has triggered an atmosphere of fear and anxiety among the affected residents. Villagers said they do not oppose the government’s action against encroachment on public land but have appealed for temporary relief from eviction at this time.

Residents have urged the government to consider the prevailing circumstances, citing the ongoing cold wave and the upcoming matriculation and higher secondary examinations, which they say would severely affect students if eviction drives are carried out now.

Appealing to the district administration and the state government, the residents have requested that any eviction action be postponed, allowing families—especially students—to complete examinations and make alternative arrangements.

The situation in Koreya Pahar and Bharalkundi Beel remains tense as villagers await a response from the authorities. The administration has yet to issue a clarification on the timing of any possible eviction drive.
