Factional feud rocks Assam Congress; blames MLA Zubair Anam camp for Hailakandi uproar
A Congress election review meeting in Assam's Hailakandi district witnessed disruption and heated exchanges on May 30, exposing apparent differences within the party's district unit.
The meeting, held at Rajiv Bhavan in Hailakandi, was attended by Aminul Haque Laskar as an observer. According to party sources, tensions flared when some Congress workers allegedly made critical remarks against the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) leadership during discussions on the party's performance and organisational matters.
The disagreement soon escalated into a verbal confrontation, with slogans reportedly being raised against Laskar. Supporters of different factions within the party allegedly exchanged accusations, leading to a chaotic situation at the venue.
Sources said the situation deteriorated to the extent that security personnel accompanying the Sonai MLA had to escort him out of the meeting premises.
Later, addressing a press conference in Silchar, Laskar alleged that supporters of Zubair Anam were behind the disruption. He claimed that some Youth Congress workers, who had allegedly acted against the party's interests during the previous Lok Sabha elections, created disturbances by raising slogans against APCC president Gaurav Gogoi and in favour of Zubair Anam.
Laskar said the incident amounted to indiscipline and that a detailed report would be submitted to the APCC. He added that the party would identify those involved and take disciplinary action in accordance with organisational rules.
The Congress leader further alleged that the events at Rajiv Bhavan appeared to be a coordinated attempt to disrupt the review meeting and undermine the state party leadership.
There was no immediate response from Zubair Anam or his supporters regarding the allegations. The APCC has also not issued any official statement on the incident.
The episode comes at a time when the Congress is reviewing its organisational preparedness ahead of future electoral battles in the state.
