Fake transgender person detained in Assam's Badarpur after public outrage

Tension prevailed in Badarpur under Sribhumi district in Assam after a person allegedly posing as a member of the transgender community was caught collecting money from the public.

The accused, identified as Akhtar Hussain alias Pooja, was allegedly impersonating a transgender person and seeking money from residents in the area.

According to reports, members of the transgender community apprehended the accused while allegedly collecting money in Badarpur. The person was later handed over to the police after being confronted by members of the community.

Anjana Sarkar, a leader of the transgender community in the Barak Valley region, alleged that several youths in Badarpur and other parts of the valley have recently been disguising themselves as transgender persons to collect money from the public.

She further alleged that some of these individuals were also involved in inappropriate behaviour with women, bringing disrepute to the genuine transgender community.

Sarkar said members of the actual transgender community are striving to live with dignity and respect in society, but such incidents are creating social problems and damaging their image.

The community has urged the administration to take strict action against those allegedly impersonating transgender persons for unlawful activities.
