Farmers seize weighing scales over alleged under-weighing of paddy, jute at Assam’s Juria market

Farmers in Assam’s Juria have alleged that agricultural produce such as paddy and jute was being under-weighed at a local market, prompting them to seize several electronic and computerised weighing scales and inform the police.

According to the farmers, produce brought to the market was sometimes recorded at 3–4 kg less per maund than the weight measured at their homes. They alleged that the practice was causing financial losses to farmers selling their produce at the market.

Following the complaints, locals seized several weighing scales used at the market and alerted the police. Police later seized two of the scales, according to the information available.

The allegations have raised concerns among farmers over the accuracy of weighing practices at the market. Assam has a weights and measures department responsible for regulating such equipment, though locals alleged that checks at the market have been inadequate.

Further action is expected following the police seizure and examination of the weighing equipment.
