Female elephant Durga shifted from Assam’s Manas to Kerala, nature lovers raise concerns

A female elephant named Durga has been shifted from Manas National Park in Assam to Kerala, prompting concerns among local nature lovers over the manner in which the animal was relocated.

Durga was reportedly moved from Mahal Camp under the Bansbari Range of the national park and transported to Kerala on the night of September 7.

Nature lover Mansukh Sankharika described the transfer as unfortunate and alleged that the elephant was taken away without the development being made public by the park authorities.

He also questioned the circumstances surrounding the relocation and expressed dissatisfaction over the manner in which the transfer was carried out.

Sankharika urged the Assam government to ensure that such incidents do not recur at Manas National Park and called for greater sensitivity towards the concerns of local people and nature lovers associated with the park.

The transfer has also prompted questions among local conservationists about the circumstances and purpose of relocating Durga to Kerala.
