Fire guts four houses in Assam’s Cachar, property worth Rs 2 crore damaged

A fire gutted four houses in the Binakandi Ghat area under Lakhimpur subdivision in Assam’s Cachar district on the morning of August 25, destroying household belongings and valuables.

The fire was reported around 8.30 am after residents and passers-by noticed smoke coming from one of the houses. Local residents initially tried to contain the flames, but the fire soon spread to the other three houses.

The Lakhimpur police station was informed, following which police and fire and emergency services personnel reached the spot. After a prolonged operation, the blaze was brought under control.

Furniture, household items, important documents and other valuables were destroyed. The affected families estimated the total property damage at around Rs 2 crore.

The families suspect that an electrical short circuit involving an inverter may have caused the fire. The exact cause, however, is yet to be established and an investigation is underway.

The four homeowners have been identified as Premjit Singh, Mukesh Singh, Dilip Singh and Manna Das. The affected families have reportedly lost most of their belongings and are now facing difficulties after the incident.

Local residents have appealed to Lakhimpur MLA and minister Kaushik Rai to arrange government financial assistance for the affected families.
