Five arrested, over 2.7 kg cannabis seized in Assam’s Margherita

Margherita Police seized a large quantity of cannabis and arrested five people, including a woman, during an operation carried out on January 6, police said.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, police intercepted a Bolero vehicle near the Margherita Tea Estate staff room and recovered 2.752 kilograms of cannabis from the vehicle. The contraband was allegedly being transported from the Namtok area of Changlang district in Arunachal Pradesh to Margherita, Assam.

Those arrested were identified as Samkang Hakhun, Simsha Hakhun, W. Hakhun and the driver Asang Ao. A woman was also arrested in connection with the case. The accused have been brought to the Margherita Police Station for interrogation.

Confirming the seizure, DSP Faiz Ahmed said the operation was conducted based on credible intelligence and further investigation is underway to ascertain the supply network involved in the case.

Police said a case has been registered under relevant sections of the law and efforts are on to identify others involved in the illegal drug trade.
