Fix your home state and backyard first: TMC MP Sushmita dev takes a dig at minister Pijush Hazarika

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Sushmita Dev on Sunday, June 1 highlighted the poor state of an incomplete embankment project in Nath Para Berenga during her visit to her home district of Cachar.

In a video message shared on social media, Dev juxtaposed the ground reality with the online image projected by top state leaders, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika.

“When you see the Twitter handles of Assam CM and the Water Resources Minister, you’ll feel everything is perfect — all embankments are complete. But this is the reality on the ground,” said Dev, pointing toward an embankment project that she claims has remained incomplete despite a budget estimate of approximately ₹1.65 crore.

Mocking the use of makeshift bamboo structures to prevent flooding, she questioned the construction methods and technological standards employed. “What is this technology? I don’t understand — bamboo is being used to hold an embankment?”

Dev also criticized Minister Hazarika’s focus on Bengal, urging him to “fix his own state and backyard first” before making comments on others. “The honourable Water Resources Minister is busy touring Gujarat and giving smart remarks about Bengal. I urge him, on behalf of the local people here, to first address the basic issues plaguing Assam.”

The embankment in question plays a crucial role in protecting the region from seasonal flooding. Its incomplete status has raised concerns among locals who fear a repeat of past waterlogging and erosion-related damages.
