Flash floods hit Assam's Jonai as rising Dikari river leave over 15 people stranded on riverine char
Flash floods triggered by incessant rainfall and a sudden surge in the water level of the Dikari River have caused widespread disruption across Jonai in Assam, inundating low-lying areas and leaving more than 15 people stranded on a riverine char along with nearly 100 cattle.
According to local reports, the overflowing river entered several residential localities, submerged roads and agricultural land, and disrupted connectivity to multiple villages in the affected areas.
The situation turned critical at Koraibari Char in Telam, where more than 15 residents became stranded after floodwaters rapidly surrounded the river island from all sides early on Sunday morning. The affected residents have remained marooned since then as the strong current and continuously rising water level prevented movement to safer locations.
Local sources stated that nearly 100 cattle are also trapped on the char, raising concerns over both human safety and livestock losses if rescue operations are delayed.
Flood conditions in Koraibari Char reportedly continued to deteriorate through the day as water levels rose further, creating anxiety among stranded families and nearby residents.
Several other parts of Jonai have also witnessed flood-related impacts, with houses, roads and crop fields submerged. Many families in vulnerable locations have reportedly moved to safer areas amid fears of further inundation.
Residents informed the Jonai administration about the emergency situation, following which arrangements were reportedly initiated to deploy a team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) for rescue operations.
However, at the time of filing this report, the stranded residents were still awaiting evacuation as authorities monitored the situation and rescue personnel prepared to respond.
The district administration has urged people residing in low-lying and vulnerable areas to remain alert as flood conditions continue to remain critical.
