Flood took their home, thieves took daughter’s wedding jewellery in Assam's Sivasagar

A flood-affected family in Assam’s Sivasagar district has been left devastated after burglars allegedly stole jewellery saved for their daughter’s wedding and Rs 70,000 kept aside for a medical operation.

The theft reportedly took place at the residence of Jitu Malakar in Luthuri Chetia village under Betbari after floodwaters receded from the area.

According to the family, the burglars took away all the jewellery that had been painstakingly purchased and saved for the wedding of Malakar’s daughter, Niharika Malakar. Her wedding had reportedly been scheduled for December.

The family alleged that the thieves also stole Rs 70,000, which had been saved for a medical operation.

Jitu Malakar and his family earn their livelihood through e-rickshaw services and daily-wage work. Over the years, they had gradually collected jewellery and savings for their daughter’s wedding despite their limited financial means.

The recent floods had already caused severe losses to the family, damaging their home and affecting their belongings and livelihood. The alleged theft after the floods has further deepened their hardship.

With their home and livelihood affected by the disaster and the savings meant for their daughter’s wedding and medical treatment allegedly stolen, the family has been left in a state of distress.

The incident has sparked concern among local residents, who have called for a thorough investigation and support for the flood-hit family.
