Floodwaters inundated 30 tea gardens in Assam, 11 severely hit, toll may rise further: Assam minister

Assam Minister Rameswar Teli on Thursday, July 30 said the flood situation has claimed around 70 to 75 lives so far, adding that the death toll could rise further as rescue teams continue search operations in areas affected by heavy inflows of debris and mud.

Speaking on the flood situation, Teli said floodwaters entered at least 30 tea gardens across the state, with 11 of them severely affected. The assessment was received through reports submitted by the Labour Commissioner, he said.

The minister stated that the current reported death toll stands at around 70–75, but cautioned that the number could increase as large quantities of debris and mud washed down from neighbouring Nagaland may have buried people in some locations.

He said relief and rescue operations are underway across the affected districts, with authorities working to ensure there is no shortage of food and other essential supplies for those displaced by the floods.

Teli further said the Indian Army has been deployed to support the ongoing rescue and relief efforts in the flood-affected areas, while state agencies continue to coordinate evacuation, distribution of relief materials and restoration measures.
