Forgotten in his final years: 98-year-old comrade of Bishnu Rabha awaits government support

As Assam observed Bishnu Rabha Divas with pride and reverence on Friday, commemorating the life and ideals of cultural icon and revolutionary leader Bishnu Prasad Rabha, a poignant reality emerged from Moran in Dibrugarh district.

A 98-year-old veteran who once worked alongside Bishnu Rabha is reportedly spending his final years in neglect, deprived of basic government welfare benefits.

Lakheswar Barua, a resident of No. 1 Dikhari village in Moran, is a veteran social activist and former associate of Bishnu Rabha. Born to Hem Barua and Dhapali Barua, he dedicated his youth to social service, patriotism and the struggle for the rights of ordinary people. Inspired by Bishnu Rabha’s ideals, Barua actively participated in movements aimed at social transformation and public welfare.

Today, however, the elderly comrade is confined to a wheelchair and faces significant hardships. According to his family members, despite being 98 years old, Lakheswar Barua has allegedly been deprived of old-age pension benefits and other government welfare schemes. The family has also alleged that his specially-abled son, Nanda Barua, has not received adequate government assistance.

Expressing concern over their situation, a family member said it was unfortunate that a person who dedicated his life to society and the nation was not receiving even the minimum government support in his old age. The family appealed to the authorities to take the matter seriously and extend the necessary assistance.

The situation has raised questions about society’s responsibility towards individuals who sacrificed their lives for the welfare of the people and the nation. On the occasion of Bishnu Rabha Divas, many observers noted the irony that a former associate of the legendary leader continues to struggle without adequate support.

Amid this situation, members of the Moran Press Club visited Lakheswar Barua’s residence on Friday and felicitated him in recognition of his contributions and lifelong service to society.

As Assam remembers the ideals, sacrifices and legacy of Bishnu Rabha, the life struggle of his veteran associate Lakheswar Barua has once again drawn attention to the challenges faced by many unsung contributors to society. It remains to be seen whether the concerned authorities will step forward to provide support and recognition to the veteran social worker in his twilight years.
