Former AGP MLA Bhupen Roy says he joined BJP without resentment, eyes Abhayapuri seat

Bhupen Roy, a former MLA who recently resigned from the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Guwahati, visited his residence at Tulungia in Bongaigaon district on March 16, where he interacted with local residents and spoke to the media.

Speaking to reporters, Roy said his decision to leave the AGP was not driven by anger or resentment towards the party. However, he admitted that stepping away from the party was an emotional decision and that he felt saddened while doing so.

Roy also stated that if the BJP grants him a party ticket, he will certainly contest the upcoming elections from the Abhayapuri Assembly constituency.

Addressing concerns over his entry into the BJP, the former legislator claimed that his induction had not created any resentment within the BJP’s Bongaigaon district unit. According to him, party workers have only expressed their views and there has been no internal conflict regarding his joining.

Expressing confidence about his electoral prospects, Roy asserted that if he contests from Abhayapuri as a candidate of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), he is certain of securing victory by a margin of around 70,000 votes.

Roy recently joined the BJP after resigning from the AGP ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
