Former ULFA members seek rehabilitation, government assistance in Moran
Former members of the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) have urged the Assam government to provide rehabilitation and employment opportunities, saying many former cadres continue to face financial and legal difficulties despite receiving one-time assistance.
The demand was raised at a press conference organised by the Former ULFA (I) Coordination Committee at Hotel Purnima in Moran. The meeting was attended by the committee's president, Rohendra Moran, secretary Kaka Bora and other office-bearers.
The committee said former members had received only one-time financial assistance from the government and had not been provided with adequate long-term support.
It urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to consider providing employment opportunities to at least one member of each former cadre's family. The committee also said its representatives would seek an appointment with the chief minister in Guwahati to present their demands and discuss the problems faced by former members.
The committee further expressed concern that recent government assistance measures cover only those who surrendered within a specified period, leaving out several former members.
It also called for steps to address pending legal cases involving former cadres, saying the burden of old cases continued to affect their lives.
The committee urged the state government to take up the issues on priority and ensure that former members are not left out of rehabilitation and welfare measures.
