Four arrested in Assam's Sivasagar arms trafficking case; probe underway
Police have arrested four persons in connection with an alleged arms trafficking network in Assam's Sivasagar district and are investigating possible links to other criminal activities, officials said on Friday, June 12.
Addressing a press conference, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Moidul Islam said the arrests were made following an investigation into the case, which has been registered at Sivasagar Police Station.
According to the police, the alleged masterminds of the network have been identified as Achinta Baruah of Gonakpatti, Amar Das alias John Mesh of Khatkhati, Bikram Baruah of Cherekapar and Papu Das of Bhatiyapar.
Officials said a handmade pistol was recovered during the operation. Preliminary investigations suggest that the weapon may have been smuggled into Assam from neighbouring Nagaland.
Islam said the investigation had revealed suspected links between the accused and other criminal activities, including vehicle theft. Police are examining whether the group was involved in a wider organised network.
The four arrested persons were taken to Sivasagar Civil Hospital for medical examination as part of the legal process. Police said three other individuals have also been detained for questioning.
Referring to allegations made by MLA Akhil Gogoi regarding a purported plot to assassinate him, Islam said the investigation has not so far yielded any specific evidence to substantiate such claims.
Police have registered a case and intensified the investigation. Officials said further arrests and recoveries could not be ruled out as the probe progresses.
