Four jail employees arrested in Assam’s Sribhumi over alleged supply of contraband inside jail

Four jail employees have been arrested in connection with allegations of facilitating the supply of prohibited items, including mobile phones and other contraband, inside Sribhumi District Jail, police said.

The arrested have been identified as Assistant Jail Superintendent Rudra Deuri, Assistant Jail Superintendent Biswajit Barua, Head Warder Musahid Ali Laskar, and Warder Subhashish Ghosh.

They were produced before the Sribhumi court and remanded in custody. The court has directed that they be produced before a court in Guwahati on June 12.

Police said the accused were allegedly involved in supplying mobile phones, tobacco products and sharp objects to inmates in exchange for money.

Additional Superintendent of Police Trinayan Bhuiyan said a search operation was conducted at the district jail on February 2 by a police team led by Senior Superintendent of Police Leena Doley. During the raid, 29 mobile phones were recovered from inmates, along with chargers, sharp objects, hookahs, bidis, cigarettes, lighters and other prohibited items.

Following the recovery, a case was registered and an investigation launched. During interrogation of inmates, police expanded the probe, leading to the arrest of two jail officers, two warders and 25 inmates in connection with the case.
