Freight train derails at Kayasthagram crossing, Assam–Tripura highway comes to a standstill
A major transportation disruption unfolded on Wednesday, December 10 after a stone-laden freight train derailed at the Kayasthagram railway crossing along the vital Assam–Tripura National Highway 8 corridor. The incident brought vehicular movement to an abrupt halt, triggering a massive traffic jam on both sides of the crossing.
According to local reports, the derailment occurred in the early hours, blocking the road completely and leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded. For nearly an hour, the Assam–Tripura highway—known as a key lifeline for inter-state travel and goods transport—remained cut off, causing widespread inconvenience to commuters.
Passengers stuck inside vehicles reported rising distress as the gridlock showed no immediate signs of easing. Authorities are working to clear the affected section, though the cause of the derailment is yet to be officially confirmed.
Traffic is expected to resume gradually once the railway and highway teams complete the removal operations and ensure safety at the site.
