A Facebook friendship that blossomed into marriage has ended in turmoil for Anupam Baruah, a Mushalpur-based garage owner and father of two. The story, which initially appeared to be a modern love tale, has now turned into a cautionary account of broken trust, legal troubles, and financial loss.
Baruah, who was living with his wife and two children, reportedly met a woman — herself a mother — through Facebook. Their online acquaintance soon deepened into a romantic relationship. Despite being married, Anupam kept the affair hidden from his family. Fuelled by dreams of starting a new life, he went on to solemnize the relationship by exchanging garlands with the woman at Guwahati's famed Kamakhya Temple, marking his second marriage.
However, within a few months, discord surfaced between Anupam and his second wife. According to reports, disagreements arose when the woman demanded that Anupam host a traditional feast for his first wife — a condition he allegedly refused. The situation escalated when the second wife lodged a complaint at Mushalpur Police Station, accusing Baruah of domestic violence, prompting him to go into hiding to evade legal action.
Though the woman later withdrew her complaint and reconciled with Baruah, peace was short-lived. Another dispute led her to leave for Guwahati, leaving the marriage strained once again.
Speaking to the media, Baruah alleged that his second wife was drawn to his wealth, particularly his luxury vehicle and assets. In his bid to sustain a lavish lifestyle to please her, he claimed to have sold his four-wheeler, which once symbolized his prosperity.
Now, left with neither the relationship nor the vehicle, Anupam Baruah has publicly urged other married men to reconsider pursuing second marriages, labeling his own experience as a cautionary tale.
