From Suchitra Nath to ‘Khadija Begum’: Woman alleges blackmail, forced marriage in Assam
Amid the controversy surrounding an alleged "love jihad" case in Nalbari, another similar allegation has emerged from Bilasipara in Assam's Dhubri district, where a Hindu woman has accused a Muslim man of concealing his identity, exploiting her, and forcing her into religious conversion and marriage.
According to allegations made in a police complaint, a man identified as Minar Hussain, a resident of Suryakhata Part-II in Bilasipara, allegedly introduced himself as a Hindu and developed a romantic relationship with a woman from Lutapara village. The complainant alleged that Minar later established a physical relationship with her and secretly recorded objectionable videos and photographs.
The woman further alleged that she was subsequently blackmailed using the recordings and was pressured into converting to Islam. According to the complaint, she was later married under the name "Khadija Begum" after her religious conversion.
The victim has also alleged that following the marriage, she was subjected to physical, mental and sexual harassment while living in a rented accommodation with the accused. She claimed that she later discovered Minar's actual religious identity and subsequently approached the police.
The woman has alleged that despite initially approaching Bilasipara Police Station, no immediate action was taken. She later sought intervention from the office of the Superintendent of Police, Dhubri.
Following the complaint, Bilasipara Police registered a case, numbered 144/26, against five persons, including Minar Hussain, Yusuf Ali, Golebanu Bibi, Mafrija Begum and Naosad Ali.
Police have not yet issued an official statement regarding the allegations, and no arrests have been reported so far. The allegations remain under investigation, and authorities are expected to verify the claims as part of the legal process.
Further details are awaited.
