Gammon Dolong bridge collapse halts NH-37 traffic in Upper Assam
A major transport link in Assam’s Sivasagar district snapped early Friday, March 27, after a portion of the Gammon Dolong bridge over the Dikhow river collapsed, bringing traffic on National Highway 37 to a complete standstill.
Officials said the incident occurred around 4:30 am, when a large section of the ageing bridge gave way, reportedly due to soil erosion around its foundation. The structure, built in 1963, had been under maintenance at the time of the collapse.
The disruption has paralysed movement across Upper Assam, with long queues of vehicles stranded on both sides of the highway. Authorities have diverted traffic where possible, but connectivity in the region remains severely affected.
The collapse also led to an accident, with a truck plunging into the river while attempting to cross the weakened stretch. There were no immediate reports confirming casualties.
Concerns had earlier been raised about the bridge’s condition. A section of its middle span was washed away earlier this year, prompting repair work and restrictions on movement.
Emergency teams and local administration officials have reached the site to assess the damage and initiate restoration measures. Commuters have been advised to avoid the route until further notice.
