The wave of grief over the untimely demise of legendary singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg continues to ripple across Assam, with the Garo community in Goalpara offering a solemn tribute to the beloved artiste.
The All Assam Garo NGO’s Forum organized a prayer service at the Chamaguri village church, where members of the community gathered in large numbers to honor Garg’s memory. The emotional programme included Bible readings, hymns, and heartfelt prayers for the eternal peace of his departed soul.
Prominent Garo singer and social activist Riya Sangma, who had performed alongside Zubeen Garg in the past, was visibly moved as she recalled those unforgettable moments. Breaking down in tears during her tribute, she described Garg as not just an Assamese icon but a voice that united diverse communities through the universal language of music.
Community leaders present at the event echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that Garg’s songs transcended linguistic and cultural barriers, forging bonds of unity among different ethnic groups. They described him as a symbol of cultural harmony whose legacy would live on for generations.
In a heartfelt appeal, Riya Sangma urged Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to establish a permanent memorial or statue in Tura, the birthplace of the legendary singer. She stressed that such a tribute would immortalize Zubeen Garg’s contribution to music and inspire future generations of artists to carry forward his vision of unity and creativity.
“Zubeen Garg was not only Assam’s pride but also a cultural bridge for the entire Northeast. His music touched every heart, and his absence has left a void that cannot be filled,” Riya said.
