Gaurav Gogoi backs Northeast students, demands strict punishment in Anjel Chakma case

Assam Congress president and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday extended support to students from the Northeast who are planning a peaceful demonstration in Delhi, demanding justice for Anjel Chakma and his family.

Addressing the media, Gogoi said that many students, particularly those from the Uttar Purvanchal and Northeast regions, wish to raise their voices through democratic and peaceful means. He said the Congress stands firmly with the students and has appealed for their right to protest to be respected.

“Our demand is very clear — Anjel Chakma and his family must receive justice,” Gogoi said. Drawing a parallel with existing legal provisions, he added that in India, the use of derogatory words against any caste attracts the strictest legal punishment. “Similarly, if racial misconduct is directed at a person from the Northeast region, it should invite the strictest punishment,” he asserted.

Gogoi stressed that racial abuse and violence against people from the Northeast cannot be treated lightly and called for strong legal action to act as a deterrent. He said the incident has raised serious concerns about the safety and dignity of students from the region living and studying in other parts of the country.

Reiterating the party’s support for the protesting students, Gogoi said peaceful demonstrations are a constitutional right and urged authorities to ensure that justice is delivered without delay.
