Gaurav Gogoi calls Assam poll verdict “extremely disappointing”, takes responsibility for Congress defeat
Gaurav Gogoi, on May 9, termed the outcome of the recent Assam Assembly elections as “extremely disappointing” and said he has taken full responsibility for the party’s poor performance.
Addressing party leaders and workers, the Congress MP said he has already conveyed the party’s position to the central leadership and that it is now up to the high command to decide the future course of action, including possible organisational restructuring and the next political steps.
“The results of the recent Assembly polls are extremely disappointing. I have said it before that I take full responsibility for it,” Gogoi said.
He added that the party has already initiated an internal review process by consulting former MLAs, contesting candidates and newly elected legislators to understand feedback from the grassroots level and identify the reasons behind the 2026 election outcome.
According to Gogoi, the Congress leadership has also begun discussions with district-level leaders and senior functionaries as part of a broader assessment exercise.
“We would be trying to identify the real reasons which can explain this particular 2026 result over the next month,” he said.
The statement comes amid intense introspection within the Assam Congress following the party’s heavy electoral setback in the state Assembly elections.
