Gaurav Gogoi flags concerns over short winter session, accuses Centre of undermining Parliamentary traditions
Following an all-party meeting convened ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi expressed strong concerns over the reduced duration of the upcoming session, accusing the Central government of intentionally limiting parliamentary debate.
Speaking to the media, Gogoi highlighted that the session is scheduled for just 19 days, with only 15 possible working days available for legislative discussions. “This is likely to be the shortest Winter Session ever. It appears the government itself wants to derail Parliament,” he alleged.
Gogoi outlined key issues raised by the Opposition that require urgent parliamentary deliberation.
He emphasized:
National security — particularly in light of the recent blast in Delhi, which he said reflects shortcomings in the country’s legal and home affairs frameworks.
Democratic security — calling for a detailed debate on voter list integrity and election-related concerns.
Public health security — as rising air pollution continues to endanger citizens across the nation.
Economic security — amid growing economic uncertainties.
Environmental and natural disaster preparedness — pointing to increased incidents of floods, landslides, and cyclones across India.
Foreign policy clarity — alleging India’s external strategies are being shaped under external influence without prioritizing national interests.
Gogoi strongly criticized the government, stating that it is “burying parliamentary decorum and digging the grave of democratic tradition” by sidelining meaningful discussions in the House.
He confirmed that Opposition parties stand united on preserving parliamentary functioning and will hold another joint meeting on Monday under the leadership of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.
