Gaurav Gogoi slams Bhupen Borah over BJP switch, questions former APCC chief's ‘Oath before Ma Kamakhya’

Congress MP and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on February 18, slammed former APCC chief Bhupen Borah, who resigned from the party on February 16, for betraying the party and Ma Kamakhya with his words.

Gogoi accused Borah of betraying his own words and questioned the credibility of his recent political commitments. Gogoi recalled that Borah had recently declared he would never join the BJP, even taking what he described as an oath before Kamakhya Temple and Bordowa Thaan.

“Just a few days ago, he said he was ready to take an oath before Ma Kamakhya that he would never join the BJP, at least not in this lifetime,” Gogoi said. “The same person was touring Majuli with us, coordinating across Guwahati. And within a day, he welcomed Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to his home as if greeting a close family member.”

Gogoi suggested that the speed of Borah’s political shift exposed the limited value of his earlier public statements. “I thought such developments would happen closer to elections. But everything was revealed much earlier, even before the Model Code of Conduct is announced,” he said.

“Till now, people accused me of being the ‘Dhurandhar’ (master strategist). In the end, Bhupen Borah turned out to be the real Dhurandhar,” Gogoi remarked, in a sarcastic swipe at his former colleague.

Gogoi questioned how much weight Borah’s words should carry going forward. “If someone can take an oath before Ma Kamakhya and not stand by it, what value should I attach to his statements?” he questioned.

He also pushed back against what he described as attempts to question his religious credentials. “We do not seek a certificate of being a Hindu leader from Himanta Biswa Sarma,” Gogoi asserted.
