Gaurav Gogoi’s wife received salary from Pakistan while living in India: Assam CM on Congress MP's alleged Pak links

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday, February 8, raised questions concerning Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi, alleging links involving foreign employment, travel to Pakistan, and citizenship decisions within his immediate family that, he said, warrant public explanation.

Addressing a press conference, Sarma claimed that Gogoi’s wife had initially worked with an organisation in Pakistan and, even after relocating to India following her marriage, continued to be “managed by Pakistani authorities” and allegedly received her salary from Pakistan through what he described as a “pass-through mechanism.”

The Chief Minister further alleged that while residing in India, she submitted periodic reports on political developments in the country, calling such actions “a matter of grave concern,” particularly in the context of national security. Sarma also claimed that Gogoi’s wife had visited Pakistan on nine occasions and that Gogoi himself had accompanied her during at least one visit.

CM Sarma said Gogoi had travelled to Pakistan on a visa issued at the request of Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior, where he allegedly stayed for 10 days. “How can a sitting Member of Parliament from India be invited by the Ministry of Interior of Pakistan? How were those 10 days spent? These are legitimate questions,” the Chief Minister said.

The Assam CM also brought up the issue of citizenship, alleging that Gogoi had surrendered the Indian passports of his two children and facilitated their acquisition of British passports. He added that Gogoi’s wife already holds British citizenship.

“These are questions that concern the public and the nation. I hope Mr Gaurav Gogoi will come clean and clarify these issues,” Sarma said, underlining that transparency was essential given Gogoi’s position as an elected representative.
