Ghanakanta Gogoi’s post-mortem likely this afternoon, AMCH treats case as custodial death

The post-mortem examination of Ghanakanta Gogoi, who died in police custody, is likely to be conducted on the afternoon of November 5 at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, as the hospital authorities arrange for forensic teams from three other hospitals to be present during the procedure.

AMCH Superintendent Dr Dhruvajyoti Bhuyan said a magistrate had informed the hospital authorities that the case was being treated as a custodial death.

According to Bhuyan, under Human Rights Commission guidelines, the post-mortem examination in a custodial death case must be attended by forensic teams from three other hospitals, in addition to the team from the hospital conducting the examination.

He said AMCH authorities had begun contacting the forensic teams from the three hospitals. The process of coordinating their arrival and ensuring their presence is expected to take considerable time.

As a result, the post-mortem examination, initially expected in the morning, is now likely to take place in the afternoon, Bhuyan said.
