GMC clears illegal blockage in Guwahati’s Rukmininagar, restores natural drainage
Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota on Tuesday said the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has demolished an obstruction in Rukmininagar that had blocked the natural flow of water and contributed to waterlogging in the area.
Sharing visuals of the demolition on his official X handle, the Chief Secretary said the blockage had been created during the last dry season and was allegedly caused by certain citizens obstructing the natural drainage channel.
He said the GMC carried out the demolition drive on Tuesday morning and restored the normal flow of water.
The Chief Secretary further stated that, as per earlier directives, the GMC, Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and the Water Resources Department are maintaining round-the-clock operational readiness to tackle waterlogging in vulnerable localities such as Rukmininagar.
The move comes amid ongoing efforts by authorities to improve drainage systems and prevent urban flooding in Guwahati during the monsoon season.
