'Gogoi, Bordoloi, and Hussain won due to fear factor among minorities': Assam CM

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Tuesday that the Congress's success in recent elections, particularly among Muslim voters, is largely driven by a "fear psychosis" surrounding the BJP.

Sarma argued that a significant portion of the minority community votes for the Congress due to concerns that if the BJP wins, their religious sites, especially mosques, could be targeted.

During a press conference, Sarma said, “They (Congress MPs) did not get votes for their popularity, but due to fear (among the minority community). There is fear in their mind that they will be attacked and their mosques will be burnt if the BJP wins. So, they vote for the Congress," the CM claimed.

Gogoi, Bordoloi and Hussain -- all three Lok Sabha MPs from the state -- have won due to "this fear factor among the minorities", he said.

Sarma went on to assert that this "fear factor" was central to the victories of the three Congress MPs, all of whom represent Assam in the Lok Sabha. However, he also pointed out that the BJP is slowly gaining support among minority voters, especially women, signalling a shift in political dynamics.

“This fear-based voting may have been effective in the past, but now we’re seeing gradual changes, with more minority women leaning towards the BJP,” Sarma concluded.
