A golden langur was electrocuted and killed near the Raimona Range Office inside Raimona National Park in Assam’s Kokrajhar district, while another sustained serious injuries in the same incident. The accident occurred in the Gossaigaon subdivision and has raised serious concerns about infrastructure safety in the protected area.
According to forest officials, the incident occurred when the langurs, while playing and moving among trees, accidentally came in contact with a live electric wire. The power line, connected from the Gossaigaon Electrical Subdivision, had reportedly been installed without proper insulation—using ordinary wire instead of the standard electric cable, which led to the fatal accident.
The injured langur is currently undergoing treatment under the supervision of the forest department and veterinary team.
Forest officials have blamed the negligence of the electricity department for the incident, alleging that improper wiring and a lack of safety measures caused the electrocution. The tragic death of the golden langur, a rare and endangered species, has sparked concern among wildlife conservationists and local residents alike.
An inquiry is expected into the matter, as locals have urged authorities to take urgent steps to ensure the safety of wildlife within the national park area.
