Gorkha community protests at Assam-Arunachal border, demands arrest of Gohpur shooting accused

Tensions escalated near Hollongi along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border on Monday evening, October 26, as members of the Gorkha community staged a protest demanding the immediate arrest of the man accused of killing his brother-in-law in Gohpur, Assam.

The accused, identified as 42-year-old Kenba Kami, a resident of Aalo in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Siang district, allegedly fled after the shooting and remains absconding. Police forces from both states are coordinating efforts to trace and apprehend him.

Papum Pare Superintendent of Police Taru Gusar said the accused had travelled to Gohpur to bring his wife back when the incident occurred at around 7:15 pm.

Following an altercation at his wife’s residence, Kami allegedly shot dead one of his brothers-in-law with a country-made pistol and critically injured another man, suspected to be another brother of his wife, with a machete.

The injured man was being referred to a hospital in Dibrugarh for advanced treatment.

The protest at Hollongi saw demonstrators block roads along the interstate border, raising tensions in the area as demands for the accused’s arrest intensified.

A case has been registered at Gohpur Police Station, and the investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Further updates are awaited.
