Gunfight erupts between armed groups, primary school burnt in Manipur’s Kangpokpi

A gunfight between two armed groups was reported in Lhunjang village along the IT Road in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district early Monday, September 7 following which a primary school in the area was allegedly set on fire.

According to police, the exchange of fire began at around 5 am in Lhunjang village, which falls under Chalwa Police Station and is located about 12 km from the police station. The firing continued for around 30 minutes.

Police said armed miscreants approached the village with an apparent intention to attack, prompting security personnel stationed in the area to retaliate. The village, which has around 40 residents, also has posts of the Manipur Rifles and displaced personnel of the India Reserve Battalion (IRB).

No injuries were reported in the exchange of fire, police said.

Following the gunfight, the armed miscreants allegedly set fire to the Lhunjang Primary School, located close to the area, before retreating. The school building was completely gutted in the blaze.

Police have not yet established the identity or affiliation of those responsible for the arson. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The burning of the primary school has raised concerns over the impact of the continuing violence in Kangpokpi on educational infrastructure and civilian life, particularly in areas affected by the prolonged conflict.
