Guwahati encounter: Police open fire as robbery accused tries to escape custody, one injured
Guwahati witnessed another police encounter on February 1, after one of the accused in a dacoity case was injured while attempting to escape from police custody. The incident took place under the jurisdiction of the Basistha Police Station, creating brief tension in the area.
According to police, three accused were arrested in connection with a robbery that occurred in the Beltola area. While being escorted by the police, one of the accused tried to flee from custody, prompting the police to open fire in self-defence.
The accused sustained a gunshot injury and was immediately rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for medical treatment. Police officials said his condition is stable.
The accused were involved in a dacoity that took place on January 30, at Nirupama Enclave, Block A and B, located on Chilarai Path in Beltola. The gang allegedly broke open the doors of several flats and looted valuable household items. They also attempted to carry out thefts in other apartments in the same complex.
Police said the robbers entered the residential premises with their faces covered in black cloth and were armed with sticks and other weapons. Taking advantage of the absence of residents, the gang targeted the homes of two individuals identified as Dibya Nath and Monomaya.
Basistha Police later arrested all three accused and recovered a large quantity of stolen articles from their possession. An investigation is underway to determine whether the accused were involved in similar incidents elsewhere in the city.
