Guwahati rehab centre owner Bornali Baishya arrested over patient assault allegations

Police have arrested Bornali Baishya, proprietor of Shristi Wellness Home in Hengrabari, Guwahati, following serious allegations of physical abuse at the women's rehabilitation facility.

The arrest came after the Assam Rehab Association filed a formal complaint at Dispur Police Station, accusing Baishya of routinely assaulting female patients. According to the complaint, the centre's owner allegedly consumed drugs during nighttime hours before physically attacking those under her care.

The case came to light when a distressed patient managed to contact the Assam Rehab Association late at night, reporting ongoing abuse at the facility. A call recording detailing the allegations subsequently emerged, prompting swift police action.

Authorities have also filed charges against Nabajit Medhi, Bornali's husband and a staff member at the centre, in connection with the assaults.

Dispur Police launched an immediate investigation after receiving the complaint. Reports say the young patients at the facility were left traumatised by the alleged attacks.

The rehabilitation centre, which caters to women seeking treatment for substance abuse, now faces scrutiny over its operational practices and duty of care towards vulnerable patients. Police continue to investigate the full extent of the allegations.
