Guwahati secures national cleanliness award, ranks 44th in population category

Guwahati has been awarded the Promising Swachh Shehar Award under the 3-10 lakh population category in the national Swachh Survekshan 2024 rankings, officials announced at Vigyan Bhawan on Thursday.

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation achieved a national rank of 44 in its population category, marking a significant milestone for the northeastern city's cleanliness initiatives. The announcement came during the annual awards ceremony recognising India's cleanest cities under the Swachh Bharat Mission.

Beyond the primary award, Guwahati also secured ODF+ (Open Defecation Free Plus) certification and received the Garbage Free City One Star rating, demonstrating sustained progress in waste management and urban sanitation.

The Mayor of Guwahati Municipal Corporation addressed the achievement as a demonstration of collaborative efforts between civic authorities and residents. The recognition validates ongoing sanitation programs that have transformed the city's approach to waste management and public cleanliness.

The Swachh Survekshan, conducted annually by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, evaluates cities across multiple parameters, including solid waste management, water body restoration, and citizen feedback. This year's assessment covered cities nationwide, with rankings determined through comprehensive field surveys and digital monitoring.

The awards ceremony highlighted Guwahati's progress under the national cleanliness mission, which has been instrumental in driving urban sanitation improvements across the country since its launch. The city's recognition reflects broader efforts to enhance the quality of life through systematic waste management and community engagement.

Municipal officials emphasised that the achievement represents an ongoing commitment rather than a final destination, with plans to maintain and expand current sanitation standards throughout the city.
