Following the collapse of the Harang bridge on Assam's Silchar-Kalain road on June 17 night due to overloading, the Army, NDRF, and SDRF have been deployed to assist affected residents and restore connectivity in Assam’s Barak Valley.
The incident brought daily life to a standstill, prompting the Cachar district administration to take immediate action.
Five individuals have been identified in connection with the collapse, and legal proceedings are underway. To ensure uninterrupted movement, boats have been arranged to ferry locals across the river from early morning to evening, with rescue personnel managing the operations.
An alternative route has also been opened, while special arrangements have been made for schoolchildren. Army and rescue teams remain on duty throughout the day to prevent overcrowding and ensure safety.
Assam Minister Kaushik Rai, along with departmental officials, visited the site to assess the situation. He assured that a temporary alternative bridge will be constructed within 5 to 7 days.
A magisterial inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the incident, and strict action will be taken against those found responsible.
The incident has caused a complete breakdown of road connectivity in the Barak valley.
