Heavy rain triggers severe waterlogging in Assam's Dibrugarh, exposes urban drainage woes
Incessant rainfall since the early hours of Wednesday, June 17, left several parts of Dibrugarh submerged under water, once again exposing the chronic drainage problems plaguing Assam's proposed second capital.
A brief spell of heavy rain was enough to inundate major roads, residential areas, and commercial hubs across the town, disrupting normal life and causing inconvenience to residents and commuters alike.
Several key localities, including Thana Chariali, Mancotta Road, Phoolbagan, Milan Nagar, Laxmi Nagar and parts of the town's main market area, witnessed severe waterlogging. Visuals from different parts of the town showed roads resembling streams, with floodwater entering streets and low-lying areas.
Residents expressed frustration over the recurring problem, alleging that despite repeated promises of development and the implementation of various infrastructure projects, authorities have failed to address the issue of artificial flooding caused by inadequate drainage systems.
The situation has also raised questions over the preparedness of the Dibrugarh Municipal Board and the effectiveness of urban planning measures in the rapidly expanding town. Citizens pointed out that even a few hours of rainfall continue to paralyse normal life, highlighting the urgent need for a long-term solution.
Dibrugarh, often projected as a model urban centre and the state's proposed second capital, is known for its growing infrastructure and economic significance. However, Wednesday's scenes painted a starkly different picture, with waterlogged streets and overflowing drains becoming a familiar sight after every spell of rain.
