Himanta Biswa Sarma becomes first Assam CM in 40 years to stay overnight in BTR

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted a historic shift in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), stating that he is the first Chief Minister in 40 years to stay overnight in the region and move freely among the people.

“This was unthinkable a few years back and has been possible only because of the Hon’ble Prime Minister and Hon’ble Home Minister’s efforts,” Sarma said, crediting the peace-building initiatives of the Central government for restoring normalcy in the region.

For four decades, BTR was plagued by insurgency and instability, making it difficult for any Chief Minister to stay overnight.

The signing of the 2020 Bodo Accord, spearheaded by the Narendra Modi-led government, played a crucial role in ending years of violence and fostering a new era of peace.

Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma arrived in Kokrajhar on Monday morning to attend a historic sitting of the state assembly, held outside Guwahati for the first time.

The first day of the Budget session of the Assam Legislative Assembly was held at the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) assembly in Kokrajhar, marking a significant move to send a message of peace to the region.

Buses carrying ministers and MLAs from across Assam travelled to Kokrajhar for the special session. Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika highlighted the significance of the event, saying, "For the first time, under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, we are going to hold the assembly session in Kokrajhar. 15 years ago, there was a situation that the people of Kokrajhar wanted a separate state, but now they don't want it and they are welcoming us... This is a great initiative. It will be continued."
